The Gazebo on the Green
Royalton became a township in 1818. An early settler named it after his hometown of Royalton, Vermont. Local lore adds that the naming cost a gallon of whiskey. Sometime between 1880 and 1890, “North” was added because another Ohio town already had the name. A historical marker on the Green dates the change to 1885.
The Village Green, bounded by Ridge, Royalton and Bennett Roads, began as the settlers’ cemetery. As it fell out of use, the graves were moved to the Royalton Road Cemetery in 1866. Around 1913 (no records were kept, so the date is approximate), a bandstand went up for the concerts held there. The money came from a Cleveland iron industrialist who spent summers in the township. Residents call it “The Gazebo,” and it appears on the city’s logo and seal.
The Green is still where the town gathers. The annual Community Festival, dating to 1884, is held there, so a lawn full of music and games feels right at home.
