The Only Rittman in America

New ProspectMilton StationEllioArkonaRITTMAN

Five names on one depot

The town went through New Prospect, Milton Station, Ellio and Arkona. Arkona sounded too much like nearby Akron, so the railroad stop was finally named for the railroad’s treasurer, and his last name stuck as the town’s name, per the city's history page.

Salt and paperboard

Salt was found here in 1897. In 1903 the salt company's founder started the Ohio Boxboard Company to package his salt and his matches, made in nearby Wadsworth. The paperboard mill later grew to more than 1,200 workers at its peak.

The president's whistle-stop

On October 7, 1948, the sitting U.S. president made a campaign whistle-stop at the Rittman depot and was handed a collection of products made in town, notes the Rittman Chamber of Commerce.
