The Singletary House, 1828

  • Home
  • Tavern
  • Stagecoach stop
  • Post office
  • First telephone exchange
  • Three antique shops
  • Heritage museum

The city's history page calls it Streetsboro's oldest frame house, built from 1826 to 1828 by one of the town’s first settlers on the square. It has been all of the roles above, and local history says it was also an Underground Railroad stop during the Civil War. Moved twice, it now houses the Streetsboro Heritage Foundation museum.

Streetsboro Road Notes

From cheese to "Gateway to Progress"

Streetsboro started as dairy country. The city's 1822–1922 history notes five cheese factories running by 1885 and a creamery shipping milk to Cleveland by the mid-1890s. It stayed mostly farmland into the early 1970s, even as the town grew from township to village to city, living up to its "Gateway to Progress" slogan.

The turnpike exit

According to the city's timeline, the Ohio Turnpike opened on October 1, 1955. Exit 13, now Exit 187, was at first the only interchange in Portage County, and a housing boom followed.

A little amusement park

From 1978 to 1982, Shady Lake was a small amusement park on Route 14, with kiddie rides, a Ferris wheel and no gate fee. That land is now home to the Shady Lake Apartments and shops.
