Orrville sat where two railroads met, and early on, cars headed from the Pittsburgh line onto the Cleveland, Akron & Columbus tracks were moved by a yoke of oxen, according to the city’s history page. Locomotives burned wood back then, stacked along the right of way.

One day that woodpile caught fire, and for several hours it threatened to take the whole village with it. It was finally put out by men, women and children who lined up in bucket brigades. A town that turns out together like that knows how to throw a party.
The Depot That Wouldn’t Quit
The Union Depot went up in 1868 at the junction of the two lines, replacing an earlier station lost to fire, and it served passengers for about 100 years. By the early 1980s it was slated for demolition. Local rail fans formed a heritage group, bought the building and the interlocking tower across the tracks, and restored the waiting room, ticket office and freight office.
